Project S.M.I.L.E. Read & Write Across America Literacy Tour exists to create and present innovative education programs. The tour has emerged as one of the nation’s premier literacy organizations recognized for its innovation in creation, education, and curriculum management.
This tour advocates for teachers because of its awareness that teachers are not bad at teaching reading and writing; it's the structured reading and writing units of the national curriculum deal in the mechanics of reading and writing which allows very little time for creativity. Units such as these have been in place since the early 1990s, yet a staggering 36% of 11-year-old boys failed to meet the expected reading and writing level in 2010 (the figure for girls was 21%).
Our author speaks and shadows real-life experiences with many aspects of reading and writing daily and when schools afford them the freedom, at least for a few hours; thereby, creating an adventurous opportunity for reading and writing that is beneficial to everyone.
Open to the public: Project S.M.I.L.E. Read & Write Across America Literacy Tour stops at Prentiss High School (Prentiss, MS) on Friday, April 13, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. This tour stop features Celia Anderson, author of "Love Ocean" and "Daddy’s Home". Both novels are sure to provide readers with great insight about a caring father-daughter relationship and its powerful impact on choices and consequences. Anderson’s background and experience in urban higher education is invaluable to the community. She holds a Master’s Degree from the University of Arkansas which speaks volumes about her commitment to education. Presently, the tour stops includes her engaging and interactive G.A.M.E. T.I.M.E. (Gaining a Meaningful Education to Insure Maximum Elevation) power point presentation.
