Charles 'Chazz' is the founder, original drummer, and lead vocalist of Grand
Central, the band that spawned Morris Day, Andre Cymone, and Prince Rogers
Nelson. Prince and Charles invited Andre (Cymone) Anderson to play bass.
Together they formed the roots of what Prince would later go on to define as
the Minneapolis Sound. #WhoIsCharlesChazzSmith
Understanding Prince's life and work allows us to address some of the key cries and struggles shaping U.S. society today, from public education to transgender activism, from opioids to police brutality, and from copyright to evangelical Christianity.
Charles "Chazz" Smith provided a framework for the panel. Where does Prince come from historically, geographically, socially, culturally? What does he mean to various groups in Minneapolis's musicians, activists, and institutions? What deeper lessons can we glean from this connection between music and place?
